A framework for assessing the impacts of the internationalization of the contemporary scene

FRAME THE GAP is a project of C.Re.SCo. which arises from the comparison between artists, operators, cultural operators and institutions that emerged during the meeting The Italian scene around the world (Brescia, 2023) organized in collaboration with LiViNG and Idra and subsequent advocacy activities of the network.

The project responds to the need for overcome the fragmentation of policies and practices for the internationalization of live entertainment in Italy, providing the sector with a shared and structural tool.

The aim is to develop a impact assessment framework of the different forms of internationalisation on the contemporary scene: mobility, participation in European networks and projects, residencies, matchmaking, tours, co-productions and career growth paths. The tool is designed for artistic and organizational realities, the results generated by it are aimed first and foremost to institutions, with the aim of supporting more effective, coordinated and long-term oriented public policies.

The project is divided into three phases:

  • a phase of research and listening to the sector, carried out through consultations and focus groups coordinated by Liv.In.G.;
  • a phase of framework processing, entrusted to a group of experts – Giuliana Ciancio, Antonio Taormina, Lucio Argano and Donatella Ferrante;
  • a phase of field experimentation, through an international matchmaking pilot project involving both artistic and organizational profiles, selected through a national call in collaboration with EAIPA.

FRAME THE GAP thus produces a shared mapping of industry strengths and criticalities through a set of indicators that can be used by all actors in the system. The results of the survey feed into an advocacy action aimed at national and international institutions and are presented to the National Assembly of C.Re.SCo. in the form of position paper, the final document originating downstream of the framework with respect to the’internationalization of the performing arts and to the international cooperation.
